Primary students of International School Brunei (ISB) came to school yesterday dressed as Hobbits, Orcs, Wizards, Elves, and Dwarves, marking the end of ISB's annual Book Week, themed on JRR Tolkien's novel 'The Hobbit'.

Joining the fun were His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel and Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah, the son and daughter of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam; and Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda 'Abdul Muntaqim, the son of His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

The ISB's 22-acre campus was named and decorated to match places in Middle-Earth, the fairy-tale world 'The Hobbit' is based on, and the day was filled with several fun activities based on the book and its characters and a wide array of costume ideas for the students and teachers to dress up in.

Each student arrived with a snack-pack containing seven pieces of food, one for each meal in a Hobbit's seven meals a day.

The entire primary school then performed a musical march where classes simulated the Hobbit's journey through Middle-Earth, with the school's music department providing the soundtrack with a Hobbit song that all the children had learnt.

After the march the students gathered in the school's sports hall where they assembled in their house colours to participate in activities simulating the 'War of the Four Armies', also borrowed from the Hobbit's plot.

The ISB Book Week began on Monday with the arrival of a special guest, Brenda Ratcliff, a long time facilitator and an author, who made the trip to work with classes and teachers to promote literacy and reading through her
workshop, 'The Hero's Journey'.

Ratcliff has worked with New Zealand government departments, students and teachers on a range of subjects and was delighted to be here presenting the Hero's Journey which links so well to the Hobbit.

Her workshop included elements of Joseph Campbell's philosophy which shows how many of our favourite stories have a common structure. Students and teachers explored this through writing, storytelling and drama.

ISB has had a major focus this year on writing skills and is excited to be able to use Ratcliff's workshop as a platform for fun learning during the Book Week, culminating in today's Hobbitthemed fun.

Also present was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak 'Abdul Haseeb bin Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Maharaja Setia Laila Diraja Sahibul Irshad Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Rahim, the son of Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah.

ISB's annual Book Week is an initiative that involves a series of fun and informative activities contributing to communication and language development, an essential part of the primary school's academic curriculum.
