During the media conference, the Acting Director of Land Transport also explained the rate of compound fines for pirate taxi activities under the Road Traffic Regulations 2016.
Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal said this was in line with Regulation 8 of the Road Traffic Regulations (Registration of Motorised Vehicles and Trailers) 2013 (Chapter 68) that the registered owner should inform the Licensing Officer in writing and present the vehicle and registration book to the working owner within 14 days, and in default, would be fined not more than 500 dollars for the first offence and 1,000 dollars for the second. The compound for pirate taxi offences under the Road Traffic Regulations (Offence Composition) 2016 are, for the first offence 50 dollars, second offence 150 dollars, third 300 dollars, and 500 dollars for the fourth offence. For the fifth offence, the offender would be brought to court and if found guilty, sentenced to 6 months in prison and fined 10 thousand dollars. Apart from that the driver or offender would be given 9 Demerit Points under SIKAP, the driver safety system after paying the compound.
Members of the public are recommended to always ensure vehicles are lent with proper permission and to monitor the activities they are used for. For vehicles under the control of companies, the company managers or employers should ensure the vehicles used by their workers conform to the given license or permit. Self-drive Rental Car, KSPS companies should ensure the vehicles are covered by insurance under the Hire and Reward term. The original owner of the vehicle registered in the bluecard or Vehicle Registration Book must ensure the sold vehicle should be under the name of the new owner. It is recommended that this is done personally by the original owner and not through a middleman, within 14 days of the sale of the vehicle.
