Since summons cases were amended to compounds with effect from February 2017, the Enforcement Unit of the Land Transport Department has issued 24 compounds to 21 drivers under Section 56, Chapter 68 of the Road Traffic Act, which is using private vehicles as public transport without a license or permit. The matter was raised by the Acting Director of Land Transport during a Media Conference on Misuse of Private Vehicles as Public Transport.
Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud explained that since February this year, the LTD's Enforcement Unit has conducted 13 operations besides implementing weekly monitoring. The Acting Director of Land Transport also shared that during the operations, several offences were identified such as a number of vehicles were used as pirate taxis without permission from the registered owners. There were vehicles used in the activity whose owners have not been changed or were not changed. Following this, the LTD called the original registered owners whose names are written on the Bluecard or the Vehicle Registration Book to provide explanation. If it was found the vehicles used in the pirate taxi activity did not belong to the pirate taxi driver, action would be taken under Section 36 (2) RTA Cap 68, which is using a vehicle without the owner's permission.
