YEN BAI, VIETNAM

Four people were injured and several houses and farm produce of residents were damaged yesterday in a limestone mine explosion  in northern Yên Bái Province’s Lục Yên District.

The four victims are Lương Văn Cần, 30; Lương Thị Nhung, 3; Trần Thanh Dự, 51; and Nguyễn Văn Huỳnh, 14.

The explosion sent limestone flying far away, leaving holes on the roofs of five houses in Mường village of Tô Mậu Commune and destroying property inside the homes. The total damage was estimated initially at nearly VNĐ50million (US$2,200).

Local authorised agencies immediately sent the four victims to the local healthcare centre for treatment and assisted affected residents, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Bùi Việt Hùng, head of Lục Yên District’s police, said.

The limestone mine in the Mường village reportedly belongs to the Bó Luông co-operative and is managed by Nguyễn Thị Kim, 49, a local resident. Residents often carry out mine blasts to extract limestone, which is used as construction material.

The Bó Luông co-operative granted VNĐ3 million ($130) each to the households hit by the explosion and ordered limestone exploitation to stop in the region.

The cause of the incident is being further investigated.
