VIENTIANE, LAOS

Laos and Myanmar have committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation on trade, investment, education and tourism between the two neighbours.

The commitment was made on Friday by President Bounnhang Vorachit and Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw at their official bilateral meeting in Vientiane on Friday, which was held after an official welcoming ceremony for the Myanmar President held at the Presidential Office.

President U Htin Kyaw, accompanied by his spouse and his delegation, which included State Counsellor, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the President's Office of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi, was on a state visit to the Lao PDR in response to an invitation by President Bounnhang.

The objective of the visit was to strengthen the friendly relations and sound cooperation between Laos and Myanmar following Mr Htin Kyaw’s election to the presidential post.

At the bilateral meeting, both sides highly valued and expressed satisfaction on the achievements related to bilateral relations and sound cooperation between the two countries over the past years.

The discussion by the two sides also included the re-opening of one of two direct flights between Vientiane and Rangoon and Luang Prabang and Bagan and the enhancement of win-win cooperation under existing bilateral and multilateral frameworks.

Both sides also agreed to continue translating into reality the agreement of the Laos-Myanmar Joint Commissions on Cooperation.

Both sides also exchanged points of view on regional and international issues of common interest.

On the same day, President U Htin Kyaw received a courtesy call from Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith where both sides discussed the strengthening of friendly relations and sound cooperation between the two countries, and laid a wreath at the Monument of Unknown Soldiers before visiting the well-known tourist attractions of That Luang, Vat Sisaket, and the National Museum.
