LABUAN: Three local men and a woman, aged between 30 and 40 years old, were detained by the police here on Saturday at Jalan Tanjung Kubong for possession of drugs and home-made guns.

Acting Labuan police chief DSP Mohd Ibrahim Mohd Ghani said yesterday that the four suspects were standing beside a four-wheel drive Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle parked at the roadside when police approached them.

“Our personnel in two patrol vehicles noticed the suspects behaving in a suspicious manner. When we checked one of the men, we found an aluminum can with 37 plastic sachets inside his pocket which contained some translucent substances believed to be Syabu,” he said, adding that the substances weighed some 6.52 grams with a street value of around RM1,000.

Mohd Ibrahim added that two home-made guns were also found inside the suspects’ vehicle and another one inside a nearby drain loaded with bullets (marble balls).

“All the suspects were tested positive for consuming Syabu with the men being remanded for four days and the woman for three days. They are all being investigated under Section 8 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

“Members of the public are advised not to use or retain guns without a valid licence even if it is only for shooting birds, because possession of anything that can function as a gun is an offence under the Arms Act 1960,” he reminded.

Meanwhile, in a separate case, a 32-year-old driver was arrested for investigation after he lodged a police report of hitting two pedestrians with his Ford motorcar at Jalan Pohon Batu in front of the Hup Huat Supermarket on Saturday at 8pm.

Mohd Ibrahim disclosed that the two victims were identified as Ermawaty Ab Wahab, 34, who was seriously injured and five-year-old Muhammad Shahraziq Shahridan who was killed in the accident.

“The two accident victims were mother and son living in the nearby village of Durian Tunjung. The suspect was believed to be on his way from town to Pohon Batu. When reaching the site of the accident, he suddenly noticed two pedestrians crossing the road before he rammed into them.

“The driver himself did not suffer any injury. One of the victims, the boy, was pronounced dead at the hospital around 8.45pm,” he said, adding that the mother was still undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Police detained the driver who made the police report on the same day at 8.30pm, for further investigation under Section 41(1) Road Transport Act 1987.

A post-mortem on the deceased was carried out yesterday at the hospital mortuary.
