Over 30 fishing boats from Kampung Batu Satu, Lutong were moved to higher ground and parked in the middle of the Lutong-Kuala Baram road after tidal waves as high as six feet caused havoc to the coastal beach last night.
About 200 villagers from Kampung Batu Satu, Lutong were on standby when the strong wind, heavy raining followed by the big tide stormed the forefront of the beach where sea water overflowed to the roadside.
No one was injured during the ordeal that lasted about 10 hours starting from about 6pm yesterday.
The road from Kampung Batu Satu to Batu Lima, Lutong-Kuala Baram Road was not accessible by road users at about 8pm last night as water rose up to three feet.
According to a fisherman Abdul Mutalib, the water level was knee high at the road in front of Kampung Batu Satu.
He said the worst could be today as the King Tide is expected to reach its highest level.
He expressed hope that the authorities would be able to temporarily block the landing outlet with boulders to stop the damaging waves from storming toward the retaining walls.
“The waves are seen as high as six feet, hitting the stone retaining wall and hitting the roofs of our fishing boat sheds, and there were logs from the sea washed ashore to the roadside,” he said.
He pointed out that if the landing outlet is not blocked temporarily tonight, the damages will be bigger and sea water may further flood Kampung Batu Satu, Lutong.
