KG KASAT, BRUNEI-MUARA
Never had it crossed my mind that I would be playing one of Brunei's century-old traditional musical instruments, let alone performing in front of a large audience.
At the Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School (SMSUA) Academic Awards, on April 9, 2016, our Gulintangan team was given the opportunity to showcase our talent in front of our schoolmates, teachers, parents and distinguished guests. The experience was surreal and it was such an honour.
I am often asked, by strangers and friends alike, why am I into Gulintangan. it is very clear and simple to me - I want to keep our tradition alive. With the rate of modernisation we are experiencing right now, if our tradition is not preserved and not practised, bit by bit everything will be forgotten. And this is my part in preserving something from the past for the future to see.
When we perform in front of others, indirectly, we are promoting the tawak-tawak, canang, gong, gulintangan and gandang labik. This is our way to raise awareness with the hope that this invaluable tradition is here to stay.
