Bruneian Woman Settled Fine in Undeclared Cigarettes Case

 May 8th, 2016  |  05:13 AM  |   3291 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

A thirty-year-old local woman was ordered to serve six months jail after admitting that she was unable to pay a BND$12,000 fine imposed by the Bandar Magistrate's Court for possessing 41 cartons of undeclared cigarettes.

The defendant, Amalina binti Untong, was found with the undeclared cigarettes in her car by Customs officials when she arrived at the Kuala Lurah Control Post from Limbang at 6.30am on March 7.

Amalina pleaded yesterday for a longer grace period to settle the fine, saying that she was unemployed with two young children to care for, and that her husband was working as a labourer.

She also pleaded not to have her case made known to the public.

Chief Magistrate Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Kefli denied her request, since she had failed to satisfy the court's order to pay by monthly instalments, which is usually denied to defendants in similar cases.

Later in the day, Amalina's family arrived to settle the fine.
