KUALA KUBU BARU, MALAYSIA

Three passengers suffered minor injuries when an electric train service (ETS) train heading to Ipoh collided with another train shortly after leaving the station here.

According to a passenger, the train had reached the Batang Kali station after travelling for about 90 minutes from KL Sentral. The train left at about 12.30pm.

“We heard a loud bang from the front and felt a jerk,” said The Star reporter Cecilia Kok, who was on board.

However, she said no one was flung off their seats from the impact.

“Some passengers in the front coaches suffered minor injuries and a woman fainted,” she said at the scene of the crash yesterday.

The front windscreen of the ETS train was shattered.

She said personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the police helped passengers get down from the train.

“We had to walk through thick bushes for 10 minutes from the rail tracks to the main road,” she said, adding that she was waiting for the bus to take the passsengers to Ipoh.

The Fire and Rescue Department said there were 510 passengers on board during the collision.

“Three who were reported to suffer minor injuries have been sent to the hospital,” it said in a statement.

The other train – an Express Rakyat service – was travelling from Butterworth to Johor Baru while the ETS train had six coaches. The accident involved three coaches.

KTM Bhd corporate communication manager Siti Badariah Wan Hanafi said several train services would be disrupted following the incident.

“The KTM commuter service between Rawang and Tanjung Malim has been cancelled. All ETS services will end at the Rawang train station and passengers will continue their journey on bus or otherwise,” she said, adding that it would provide updates.
