The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) needs to be more proactive in generating an income to finance its activities in order to ensure the organisation's sustainability.
This was highlighted by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, who was guest of honour at the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebration held at the Lecture Theatre of Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium yesterday.
He also commended the BDRCS on its long illustrious history and its celebration of its 68th anniversary in May this year.
"The association has seen a leadership transformation whereby youths are given the opportunity and trust to become key leaders in the BDRCS National Executive Board," he said.
"Youths are the generation who will contribute to the future of the humanitarian movement and become the main affiliation to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)," he said.
He also lauded the establishment of the BDRCS first aid academy which last year acquired recognition from the IFRC to issue first aid certificates.
The minister said he "appreciates the involvement of BDRCS in works in disaster management on a national level".
"The association is active in caring for the underprivileged through charity projects," he added.
Awang Haji Ismail bin Kassim, the President of the BDRCS National Executive Board, conveyed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) for the yearly statutory contributions received by BDRCS since 2014. He said that without the assistance, the BDRCS' international membership would be affected.
The highlight of the celebration was the presentation of insignias to members of the BDRCS National Executive Board as well as advisors to the board by the minister.
Also present at the ceremony were senior officials from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).
