Working Visit at Postal Services

 January 12th, 2018  |  10:42 AM  |   816 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Postal Service needs to diversify efforts to enhance its quality in the face of current challenges which are influenced by on-line business or commerce, communications with other nations and connectivity with International Postal Services tracing or detection system.  Highlighting the said matter during a working visit to the Mumong Post Office in Kuala Belait this morning, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat, the Minister of Communications outlined plans on handling current challenges which are geared towards better postal services.

The Minister said the declining sale of stamps is among the biggest challenges faced by the postal services. Yang Berhormat highlighted that today's services are more dependent on e-commerce and Brunei Darussalam needs to have 'connectivity' with other countries. There has to be a transformation because the challenges demand the postal services to diversify their efforts, not just sell stamps or delivery of cargo but more importantly be involved in economic and business activities.

During the working visit, the Minister also inspected postal service and immigration counters, as well as non-postal service booths which are open to small and medium enterprises, SMEs.  The boots are rented out with the intention of increasing the number of entrepreneurs in Belait District. Explaining the measure, Yang Berhormat said the infrastructure was meant to facilitate the ease of doing business. For example an inflexible rental system in the early stages would slow down the growth of the SMEs. Therefore, the entrepreneurs are encouraged by imposing only minimum rental payment, while other plans include some form of rebranding. The stamps would be rebranded and services improved and given a facelift. The Minister added all post offices in the country would take a more business-oriented approach.

The 3-storey Mumong Post Office at Jalan Maulana in Kuala Belait was completed in 2015. It operates counters for selling stamps, renewal of vehicle and driving licenses as well delivery of letters and parcels. A philatelic museum is also placed at the post office, exhibiting stamps, first-day covers and artefacts related to the history of the postal services.
