Cleanliness Is the Responsibility of All

Brunei Muara

Islam advocates that the ummah practise or maintain cleanliness in all matters including the environment and the country. In Islam, cleanliness is viewed as a main part of Iman or faith. Lack of awareness on keeping all things clean can result in an untidy and unhealthy environment which in turn leads to risk of diseases.

A visit by RTB crew to several areas in Brunei Muara this morning showed that many people are still irresponsible and throw garbage randomly.   Garbage is dumped everywhere without any feeling of guilt.  Although special rubbish dumping areas are provided the problem has gotten worse and difficult to curb.

Cleanliness should be a way of life to ensure public health.  Such civic mindedness begins at home through proper parental upbringing and the elders should act as role models to the young ones.  Maintaining cleanliness at home would also become a practice elsewhere.

The lack of awareness on keeping the environment clean would lead to fly borne diseases.  And worse still, it could also cause flooding once drainage became clogged with garbage.  Clean water supply would be affected if floods continued to plague a certain area.  If this is not solved quickly, the problem would become a heavy burden to individuals, the family, community and the nation as a whole.

Dirty surroundings or environment would affect the beauty of a place and create a negative impression among tourists visiting the country.

Ultimately, keeping the environment clean and beautiful is vital for health, safety and comfort among the community especially as the country targets top quality life for the people in the Wawasan Negara 2035.  Practising cleanliness in daily life would make the country healthy and free from dangerous diseases.
