BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The percentage of parents and guardian's involvement in the School-Parents and Teachers Association (PIBG) activities needs to be improved. According to the Minister of Education, the 2016-2017 statistics showed parents and guardians' involvement is around 35 to 38 percent only, while their attendance at the yearly academic meeting is around 62 to 68 percentage in average. Speaking at the 'Ibu Bapa Prihatin Pendidikan' Convention, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, highlighted the important role of parents in supporting their children's education and assist any initiatives by the Ministry of Education towards enhancing the quality of education as well as the student's progress.

Yang Berhormat Pehin said, among the initiatives is to improve the school-home link among parents and school as well as the PIBG Association. The initiatives in primary and secondary level will not be accomplished with parents' participation or support. Regardless of parents socio-economy background and challenges, parents role in their children education are still vital.

Touching on the overall achievement of students in this country, the Minister of Education added the students still required attention. Yang Berhormat Pehin highlighted that no party should act passively in the Ministry's effort to increase the overall educational achievement in the country. The feedback from the Schools Department shows poor accomplishment in Mathematics has contributed to the overall primary schools low achievement. The students were also identified as having lower literacy and numeracy basic skills especially those undergoing the Remedial Education programme. Lack of basic skills are among the reason why students are facing difficulty in answering the higher order thinking skills or HOTS questions. Therefore, teachers are required to spend more spend time to improve the students basic skills.

Also present was Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, Deputy Minister of Education. 308 person comprising PIBG's chairman or representative and parents from the four districts took part in the convention.
