Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak  expressed appreciation to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) for its Community Homes project initiative as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

He said the initiative should be commended as the university’s experts and volunteers had collaborated in assisting the government to help the underprivileged people to own homes.

“The Community Homes project is a social effort by UMS that prioritise the poor, those with no stable income and do not have their own homes. It is a free home project for the eligible target groups.

“UMS students have volunteered to build these homes. The responsibility and joy should be shared with those in need,” he said in his speech at the handing over of a community home in Kampung Pantai Emas here today.

Kota Belud fisherman, Rodzlee Adkil, 36, who earns RM400 per month, received the 600 sq feet house which is equipped with three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and living room.

The house, built at a cost of approximately RM20,000, was constructed using the industrialised building system (IBS) in less than a month.

UMS vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr D Kamaruddin D Mudin said besides the one in Kota Belud, three other units were built in Sipitang, Tawau and Sandakan, and would be officiated next month.

Meanwhile, Rodzlee thanked UMS for the new house which he found very comfortable for himself, wife and six children.

“I am very happy to get this house. I have indeed dreamed of having my own home. Today, my dream has come true thanks to UMS for their concern and assistance,” he added.

The selection of Rodzlee as the Community Homes recipient was made by the Kota Belud district office via the e-Kasih records. – Bernama
