Seven Reasons Squirrels Are Clearly The Best Rodents Around
Do you deny it? (Picture: Declan Andersen/Caters)

Anyone who doesn’t like squirrels can fight me – the cute (but angry) little rodents make any visit to the park better, even if they’re the grey ones.
Today is the day that these underrated animals get the respect they deserve. Rather than being brushed off as rats with bushy tails, they are rightfully lauded on January 21 as part of Squirrel Appreciation Day.
Don’t hate, appreciate.
If you are yet to be convinced of the value of these nut-munchers, may we humbly present these seven reasons why squirrels deserve our love.
1. They are mischievous and should have their own TV show
Last year this squirrel became famous after launching a series of raids on a Toronto corner shop.
Showing a clear preference for Crunchie (you’d think it would go for Snickers?), the animal aims for bars on the lower shelves to make a speedy exit with its loot.
Classic squirrel!
2. They also like to ride the tube
See, we told you they like to cause trouble.
These animals are not ones for staying home in their squirrel holes chewing on last year’s acorns.
You can find them on London Underground, upsetting commuters by diving in and out of people’s bags and shoes.
Hopefully this one managed to find its way home after hopping off.
3. They know how to handle themselves
You might think squirrels look meek and cute.

Well, they are definitely cute – but cute with a mean set of fangs, like this one in Brooklyn who terrorised the neighbourhood so much that people had to stick up warning signs.
It even attacked a child – proof they can tap into a dark heart of savagery beneath the fluffy exterior, just like all the best animals.

4. They love ice cream and will do anything to get it
Yeah, this manipulative squirrel (going by the name of Putter) built a whole relationship on the basis of getting ice cream.
Scott and Pam Martin who own Fantasy Isle Ice Cream shop in North Carolina give the animal a tiny cone when it comes to visit.
They are probably getting good PR from this so everyone benefits in this exchange.
Or maybe they all just truly love one another.
5. Some enjoy being walked on a lead
Declan Andersen, 37, rescued this red squirrel when he found him injured in his garden, and since then things have taken an unconventional turn.
They now go for walks around the neighbourhood in Denmark with TinTin on a lead to stop him wandering off and eating rubbish, which he is partial to.
‘Our friendship is more like father and son,’ Declan says.
6. Squirrels can also be sexy
Yeah, that’s right. Check out the sultry look as it grasps that nut.
Barbara Lawrence from Southern California took this photo, proving that squirrels have many and varied talents.
However, the photo of the squirrel laying on his stomach is not as it seems…
‘This photo gives the illusion that he’s laying down, when actually he was hanging down,’ Barbara said.
7. They know how to have a good time
If you thought squirrels were the abstemious type, you were wrong.
They absolutely love to get on the lash – like this one, who got drunk on fermented crab apples and then literally fell out of its tree. Lad.
Just one more reason we want our best friend to be a squirrel, just like Declan.
The end.
