Ambassadors of several European Union member states have expressed their readiness to strengthen cooperation with their counterparts in Central Java.

They expressed their commitment on the sidelines of a two-day visit in Semarang, Central Java, which will end on Thursday.

During their meeting with Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and Semarang Mayor Hendrar Prihadi on Wednesday, the EU ambassadors expressed their hopes that the visit could push forward cooperation between their respective governments, which include local administrations, business players, academicians and civil society groups in the province.

On Wednesday’s visit, the ambassadors visited Kampung Pelangi (Rainbow Village), a community with colorfully decorated houses that has become a new tourism destination in Semarang.

EU Ambassador for Indonesia Vincent Guérend led the visit, which was attended by diplomats from 12 EU member countries, including Austrian Ambassador Helene Steinhäusl, Belgium Ambassador Patrick Herman, Croatian Ambassador Drazen Margeta, Denmark Ambassador Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen, Germany Ambassador Michael Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg, Greek Ambassador Georgios Dogoritis, Ireland Ambassador Kyle O’Sullivan and Italian Ambassador Vittorio Sandalli.

During their meeting with Ganjar, they discussed political, social and economic developments in the province, and later about development in Semarang with the city’s mayor, Hendrar.

“We have cooperated with Indonesia in several fields that have become our shared concerns, such as education, environmental protection, trade and investment, as well as good governance. Hence, it will be really good for us to exchange views about those concerns or other topics with both the Central Java governor and Semarang’s mayor,” Guérend said. (ebf)
