LONG LAMA
The state government has been urged to look into ways of producing products from durians of Long Lama that has gained popularity not only in Miri division but also in other parts of the state.
In making this call, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said this could help to boost local agricultural development and enhance the state’s economic growth.
“Long Lama durians are well known for high quality and good taste.
“Thus, we would like to propose for the state government to look at how to turn these durians into high quality products as we aim to continue promoting and selling our fruits and fruit products to a wider market and help boost our economic development.
“Setting up a durian factory at Long Lama might be a possible move with the huge number of durian trees still producing big quantity year in year out for a long time,” he opined when officiating at the ‘Malam Hiburan dan Kebudayaan’ (Entertainment and Cultural Night) at SJK (C) Kee Tee hall here yesterday.
The event was held in conjunction with the ‘Pesta Penguman Asen’ (Local Food Festival) Telang Usan to be officiated by the Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas who is also Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development here later today (Jan 27).
Meanwhile, Telang Usan district officer Baru Tai, who is also the festival organising chairman, said the inaugural festival aimed at promoting economic growth in the state constituency.
“Such initiative is important to provide a platform not only to strengthen our relationships but also for promoting our agricultural and handicraft products and enhance our agro-economic development.
“Thus, I would also like to urge the locals to plant more durians as we would like more people to come here and enjoy its great taste,” he added.
