MIRI, SARAWAK
The authorities are mulling over whether to ban the use of polystyrene containers in Miri City.
To this effect, an indepth study will be carried out, says Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai Yew Son, adding that the ban will not be imposed in haste due to the current economic situation as it would affect business operators.
“We have to consider their plight and it is not conducive to implement it immediately, what with the rising cost of living now,” he said in a media conference here yesterday.
Nevertheless, he said the Miri City Council might consider implementing it in stages, beginning with the first step of making the public aware of the health and environmental concerns involved in using polystyrene.
Sibu became the first town in Sarawak to ban polystyrene takeaway containers, effective Jan 1 2014.
In as far as states are concerned, Penang took the lead by becoming the first to ban the use of polystyrene containers, beginning Dec 1, 2012, followed by Melaka on May 15, 2015.
On another development, Lai said, a total of 48,950 properties in Miri City were eligible for discount following reduction in the annual assesment rate as announced by Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem last month.
In addition, he said, a total of 1,317 properties were exempted from paying the assessment rate.
Sarawak reduced residential property assessment rates backdated to Jan 1, this year.
