It is important to have exposure to entrepreneurship at a student level, as such exposure can help students develop an entrepreneurial mindset that is based on innovation and solving problems.
These were some of the points highlighted by Goh Chai Li, Education Officer at the Politeknik Brunei, during an interview yesterday on the sidelines of Politeknik Brunei's second entrepreneurship exhibition, 'ENTx 2016'.
The exhibition gave students from Politeknik Brunei's School of Business and School of ICT the opportunity to showcase their innovative ideas to the public while also working to achieve market validation.
In the interview, Goh Chai Li highlighted the importance of having entrepreneurship exposure at a student level.
"At Politeknik Brunei, our slogan is 'Innovation Begins Here'," she said. "We believe entrepreneurship should be integrated across all the different principles and disciplines.
"You can use entrepreneurship everywhere. It's really about having an entrepreneurial mindset, solving problems, innovation. So it doesn't really matter what kind of subject you are a studying."
She said that exposure such as that of yesterday's entrepreneurship exhibition can help students develop an entrepreneurial mindset and skills.
"If you can see what they are doing here, it's trying to communicate with people. It's really out of their comfort zone. Before this we had a group pitch where they had to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges, and before that they did a business plan.
"So what we're doing here is not just teaching them how to write a business plan, but how to pitch, how to communicate confidence, leadership, teamwork and how create something. We want to do the practical of this, and not just the study of it."
When asked what kind of results they hope to achieve, she said, "It's more about the students.
We hope that students can learn from this, because this kind of opportunity doesn't come every day."
She highlighted that Politeknik Brunei is trying to hold more events like this where the students can give their entrepreneurial skills more public exposure.
"I really hope students can learn something and appreciate this opportunity that Politeknik Brunei has offered. Learn something out of it, at least get some takeaway, and just be entrepreneurial."
She once again highlighted the importance for students to have "that entrepreneurial mindset of solving problems, being confident, and being daring," adding that this is "the kind of mindset we want to instil."
"It's not just about designing a business plan. It's more to skills, building them up as people who are entrepreneurial and confident."
When asked for her thoughts on the participating students' efforts at ENTx 2016, she said, "I can see their effort. I am very proud of the students."
