BRUNEI DARUSSALAM

Social media is abuzz with issues raised at the recently-concluded Legislative Council (LegCo) Meeting including the topic of citizenship.

"I have a friend who has family born and raised in Brunei Darussalam and has received letters from the Immigration and National Registration Department saying that they have passed the Malay examination under section 5 (i) of the Nationality Act four years ago. But they have yet to receive their citizenship," said a netizen.

A concerned member of the public who spoke on condition of anonymity said, "Based on much feedback, the applicant needs to wait for a response from relevant authorities."

Another netizen who wished not to be named said he received the citizenship certificate several years ago in a ceremony and was grateful for such a valuable award and thanked the government.

Meanwhile, a netizen named Qadri said relevant authorities should grant citizenship to stateless people in the country judging by the difficulties faced when travelling abroad as they need a visa to go to other countries with the exception of Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak.
