Based on the statistics issued during the opening of the Legal Year 2018, in the Supreme Court, 7 Civil Appeal Cases from High Court and Intermediate Court were forwarded to the Court of Appeals last year -- one more than in the previous year. Criminal Appeals brought to the Court of Appeals in 2017 totalled 21 cases, three less than in 2016.

 

A total of 77 civil cases were registered last year as opposed to 93 in 2016. 9 criminal cases were registered in the High Court last year compared to 11 in 2016.

 

Civil appeal made from the Magistrates Court to the High Court in 2016 totalled 2 cases. However, no civil appeal were made from the Magistrates Court to the High Court last year. Meanwhile, 39 criminal appeal cases were made from Magistrates Court to High Court last year, one less than in 2016.

 

Meanwhile, 359 civil cases were recorded for Chamber hearing before Registrars in the High Court last year compared to 339 cases in 2016.

 

Bankruptcy notices increased from 578 in 2016 to 587 last year. 461 Receiving Order were also made in 2017 and 59 Adjudication Order were registered last year.

 

There is an increase in Marriage and Divorce cases last year. Marriage rose from 134 in 2016 to 144 last year, while divorces increased to 45 cases last year compared to 36 in 2016.

 

 

In the Intermediate Court, civil cases showed a decrease as compared to criminal cases. In 2016, 49 civil cases were recorded compared to 68 in the previous year. Criminal cases on the other hand, rose to 88 cases compared to 51 cases in 2016. Commercial Case increased from 191 cases in 2016 to 224 cases last year.
