KUALA BELAIT

Sayyidina Ali Secondary School from Kuala Belait was crowned as the champion of the Great Debate Competition 2018 after beating the Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre. The final took place this morning at Dewan Raya, Radio Television Brunei in the capital.

In attendance was Dayang Nadia Lee Siew Hoon binti Abdullah, the Deputy Permanent Secretary for Core Education at the Ministry of Education. His Excellency Richard Lindsay, the British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam as the competition's co-chairman, in his welcoming speech explained that the competition can improve the strong existing educational ties between Brunei Darussalam and the United Kingdom to support the Wawasan Negara 2035 in producing a generation of dynamic leaders.

During the debate, both sides discussed and understand the main role of Commonwealth Association particularly for the youth. Apart from promoting public speaking in English, such competition can become a platform to identify talents among students who would potentially represent Brunei Darussalam at international level.

Dayang Jemimah Wen-Xi Liew from Sayyidina Ali Secondary School was selected as the Best Speaker. The competition was organised by the Department of Co-Curriculum Education, Ministry of Education through the Art and Culture Unit, with the British High Commission with the support of CFBT Education Services Sendirian Berhad and Radio Television Brunei.
