Sports Excellence Incentive Scheme Awards Ceremony

Athletes who brought honour and glory to the country at regional sports events have received the Sports Excellence Incentive Scheme awards.  The awards were incentives for them to strive for success or better performance at regional and international sports events.  The award ceremony was held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex Indoor Stadium in Berakas.  Gracing the ceremony were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddin Sa'adul Khairi Waddien and Her Royal Highness Princess 'Azemah Ni'matul Bolkiah binti His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah.

 

Upon arrival, His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness were greeted by Yang Berhormat (Retired) Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

 

In her opening address, Datin Paduka Doctor Hajah Norlila Binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports said the involvement of members of the Royal Family at the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur last year showed not only continuous but also stronger and increasing concern and commitment to the development and direction of sports in the country and in creating future history in sports.

 

66 athletes, 20 coaches and assistant coaches and ten National Sports Associations received Victory Rewards under the Sports Excellence Incentive Scheme. Among the recipients was Her Royal Highness Princess 'Azemah Ni'matul Bolkiah, who was a core member in the National Polo Team at the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur lalst year.  Also receiving the award was Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Bahar ibni His Royal Highness Prince Haji Jefri Bolkiah, a member of the National Polo Team at the Kualu Lumpur SEA Games.  The National Polo team was third and won the bronze medal after competing against Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore.  The rewards were presented by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

 

The other recipients were athletes who represented Polo, Wushu, Pencak Silat, Lawn Bowling, Netball, Sepak Takraw, Karate, Athletics, Tenpin Bowling, Cycling and Cue Sports who won medals at the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur last August, the 9th ASEAN Para-Games also in Kuala Lumpur last September, the 6th International Wushu Championship Pars Cup last April in Semnan, Iran; the 79th Singapore Open Track & Field Event also in April; the 8th Golden Break 9-Ball Championship 2017 in Kuala Lumpur in July and pada the 9th Asian Junior Wushu Championship in Gumi, Korea last September.  Overall, the country won 5 gold medals, 7 silver and 18 bronze medal at the six events.
