A council in Scotland has come under fire after saying they couldn’t empty wheelie bins because of the freezing conditions.

Renfrewshire Council said they couldn’t carry out collections earlier this week because rubbish inside the bins had frozen.

Temperatures across Renfrewshire had dropped as low as -4°C, although climbed to 2.3°C on Wednesday afternoon.

But customers were told by the local authority that they would have to wait until the next scheduled date which is two weeks time.

The council posted on Facebook: ‘Brown bins could not be collected today as their contents froze in the icy weather.

‘They will now be collected on the next scheduled date. Apologies for any inconvenience.’

Zeb Harris responded to the post saying: ‘As an ex pat living in Mid Norway, our bins are emptied every two weeks. The temperature here are between -10 and -30c. during the winter months. They don,t have problems. P.S we even have snow for about five months of the year……’

Residents from the area commented on the ‘wind up’ while others joked they wouldn’t pay council tax ‘this week’.

One of the posts said: ‘I have heard some belters, but this one is a cracker.’

Another added: ‘Lol still waiting on mine being emptied from over 1 month ago, also still waiting on my disposable bags, that’s been 6 months now!’

Another continued: ‘It’s like you don’t even try anymore.’
