Healthy Mukim Programme Launching Ceremony

Non-communicable diseases are one of the biggest health and development challenges in the century. If it is not tackled, non-communicable diseases can affect the nation's socio-economy due to its negative effects in terms of lower productivity, and the increasing medical costs. Non-communicable diseases are the main cause of deaths in the country such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and stroke. This was highlighted by Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Doctor Awang Haji Md Isham bin Jaafar, Minister of Health at the Healthy Mukim Programme Launching Ceremony for Mukim Pengkalan Batu, organised by the Ministry of Health and Mukim Pengkalan Batu Consultative Council yesterday morning.

 

According to Yang Berhormat, based on the serious risk, impact and the burden of such diseases, we cannot afford to delay in taking preventive actions. The Ministry of Health stressed that patients or those who have been identified to have risks of such disease, it is important to ensure that treatments are effective and avoid any complications for the patients. The Minister added that all measures require close cooperation and commitment from various sectors, the society, patients as well as their close family, to ensure success and efficacy in overcoming the problems of non-communicable diseases. The Minister of Health also touched on the establishment of a committee on healthy lifestyle promotion and practice with the involvement of representatives from Mukim Consultative Council, Pengkalan Batu Health Centre, government agencies and private sector. To further strengthen the role of the committee, several committee members has been appointed as Ambassador of Health.

 

Among the activities held during the Healthy Mukim Programme include aerobics' session, walkathon, cycling expedition, health check services and health roadshow. The programme was conducted to raise the public's awareness on healthy lifestyle and on non-communicable diseases.
