Hoisting the National Flag symbolises the consensus and unity of the country's citizens and residents in upholding the independence of the people, country and religion. Yang Di-Pertua of Adat Istiadat Negara stressed the National Flag is an important symbol of an independent and sovereign nation. Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pengiran Anak Haji Abdul Aziz bin Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar, as the Co-Chairman of the 34 National Day Celebration Executive Committee stated this during the Distribution of Miniature Fags and the Semarak Pengibaran Bendera Programme for primary, secondary, Arabic, religious and private schools students in Tutong district yesterday morning. The ceremony took place at Sayyidina Othman Secondary School in Bukit Beruang, Tutong.

 

Earlier, Datin Paduka Doktor Hajah Norlila binti Dato Paduka Haji Abdul Jalil, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports as the Co-Chairman of the Hoisting and Lowering of the Giant-sized National Flag and the Distribution of Miniature Table Flags and Semarak Pengibaran Bendera Programme Working Committee in her speech explained the ceremony reflected the importance of encouraging the country's citizens and residents, especially the youth to respect the National Flag. 

 

During the ceremony, Yang Amat Mulia distributed the miniature flags to the representatives of primary and secondary schools in Tutong District. Five thousand miniature flags were distributed to students in the four districts in conjunction with the country's National Day this year. 

 

There was also a video clip on 'Semarak Pengibaran Bendera Negara' or the Glory of Hoisting the National Flag, and an animated video on the procedure of flag hoisting. The ceremony was further enlivened with a performance by Mukim Telisai Choir, the winner of the Tutong Inter-Mukim Patriotic Songs Choir Competition who sang 'Merdeka Brunei Darussalam'. Also in attendance were Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Umarali bin Esung, Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Abdul Wahab bin Apong, Yang Berhormat Awang Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit, Members of the Legislative Council, Dayang Nadia Lee Siew Hoon binti Abdullah, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Awang Roslan bin Haji Taja'ah, the Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Awang Haji Adnan bin Haji Adam, the Acting District Officer of Tutong.
