Mitt Romney, the Republican Party's 2012 presidential nominee, announced Friday that he is running for a U.S. Senate seat from the western state of Utah.
"I am running for United States Senate to serve the people of Utah and bring Utah's values to Washington," Romney, 70, said in his tweet.
He said it is "the right time to serve our state and our country."
Romney is running for a seat currently held by Orrin Hatch, the longest-serving Republican senator who announced his retirement earlier this year.
During the 2012 general election, Romney, as the Republican presidential nominee, was defeated by then incumbent Democratic President Barack Obama.
Romney was an outspoken critic of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election.
