Four units of shophouses in Lawas town were almost totally destroyed by fire on Saturday night.

The fire is believed to have started from a grocer shop at about 9pm and later spread rapidly to other units.

Lawas Fire and Rescue Department rushed a team of firefighters to the scene barely half a kilometre away from the fire station but the fire has engulfed the entire four units.

The blazing flames and smoke could be seen a long distance put of town as it lit up the sky.

Losses could not be immediately ascertained.
