The Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) yesterday became the first in the country to provide pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS) together with the already established in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment in hopes of further boosting the success rate of conceiving a baby following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sengenics Brunei Sendirian Berhad.
The latest capability of JPMC will attract foreign medical tourists who are seeking a private and quiet place to carry out PGS and IVF treatment as well as help boost local employment.
Dato Paduka Dr. Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar, Medical Director of JPMC, said in his speech, "Jerudong Park Medical Centre is widely renowned for being the only private specialist hospital and the first hospital to be accredited by the Joint Commission International (JOI) in the Sultanate. JPMC offers a spectrum of services catering to family and organisational needs, which include general, specialised and surgical healthcare."
On Sengenics Brunei, he explained, "(It) is a genomics and proteornics-based research and diagnostics company with a range of patented technologies and products that are marketed to pharmaceutical companies, scientists and hospitals."
He added, "The signing of the MoU will help provide us with a committed approach to working more closely together with an aim to be the first to provide IVE Treatment with the aid of pre-implantation genetic screening from Sengenics Brunei Sdn Bhd. The two organisations will extend support for couples who have concerns with conceiving as the treatments can help increase the chances of pregnancy rates via IVF whereby only chromosomally normal embryos are implanted which can help reduces miscarriage rates."
Dr. Arif Anwar, the Executive Director of Sengenics, in a separate interview lauded the partnership as "combining expertise of IVF treatment from JPMC and our expertise of pre-implantation genetic screening, and we think that there is a huge opportunity for Brunei to grab a slice of the global IVF treatment market which is estimated at around 1.9 billion dollars per year. If Brunei can get even a one per cent share of the market, it will be very good for JPMC, good for the local economy and good for Sengenics."
"We are trying to partner with Royal Brunei Airlines as well as The Empire Hotel & Country Club for bringing in foreign medical tourists," he added.
In promoting the new service around the world, he said, "we are coming up with a marketing plan with JPMC to promote the joint service to targeted countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and other countries including those in the Middle East."
Elaborating the key advantages of Brunei in attracting people, he said, "Going for an IVF treatment process is very emotionally difficult and is very private. Clinically it is very important to be in a very relaxed environment. Due to JMPC's location at the beach and the fact that Brunei has a very peaceful and relaxed environment, combined with JPMC's and Sengenics' expertise, patients around the world would think that seeking treatment in Brunei would be a very nice alternative."
Touching on local employment, he revealed that in the last 12 months, some 15 locals were hired under Sengenics and is hoping to look for more Bruneians to join the team.
Signing the MoU on behalf of JPMC was Awang Abdul Latiff bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, a member of the Board of Directors at the Jerudong Park Medical Centre, while Johan Poole: Johnson, Commercial Director signed on behalf of Sengenics Brunei.

Meanwhile, JPMC's Head of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Reproductive Medicine Unit, Dr. Chitra Karat, during a sideline interview said, "Through PGS and the IVF treatments, we can increase the pregnancy rate to around 75 per cent. IVF treatment has been in JPMC since the hospital was established and it is the only hospital in Brunei to provide such services."
