A prominent former member of two significant Brunei Darussalam Japan Associations has been named as a recipient of Japan's 2016 spring decorations.

Hiroshi  Sawada, former president of the Japanese Association Brunei Darussalam and former secretary-general of the Brunei-Japan Friendship Association is receiving the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays from the Government of Japan.

The Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam shared this in a press release yesterday, which states that on April 29, the Government of Japan announced the recipients of the 2016 Spring Decorations, with Sawada among the recipients.

"He received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, in recognition of his significant contribution to promote bilateral relationships between Brunei Darussalam and Japan, as well as to further Bruneians' understanding of Japan," reads the press release.

"Sawada is the first Japanese to receive this honour in relation to Brunei Darussalam," it was also shared.

He lived in Brunei Darussalam for more than 30 years, first arriving in the country as a project manager for the Mitsubishi Corporation in its joint venture with Brunei to set up McFarm at Kampong Tungku, Gadong, which worked on livestock breeding.

The press release goes on to add, "In the afternoon of May 12, Sawada, together with his spouse, Shigeko Sawada, will attend the conferment ceremony conducted by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Japan, Fumio Kishida, and will be received in audience by His Majesty the Emperor Akihito at the Imperial Palace."
