A Large Number Of Visitors Curious To See Sand Sculptures

VIENTIANE, LAOS

A large number of visitors continue to flock to Vientiane’s Don Chan Island to see firsthand the sand sculptures representing landmarks and symbols of ASEAN member countries.

“Since the joyous celebration of Pi Mai Lao B.E. 2559 in mid April, many domestic and foreign visitors and Vientiane residents have continued to visit the island to see the sculptures.  Although there are few visitors on weekdays, during the weekends many people come because they want to see and experience the sculptured works that are beautiful and represent the cultural identities of Laos and other ASEAN member states,” said Ms Ladsadaphone Boutsady, President of the Proplus Agency.

The sand sculpture activity is part of the celebration of Pi Mai Lao B.E. 2559. The sculptured works will be available for visitors to see through rainy season or until the water begins to reclaim Don Chan Island.

The sand sculpture activity cost more than 700 million kip (over US$86,000). It is designed to beautify Don Chan Island while turning it into a tourist destination featuring many interesting activities to attract visitors during the Pi Mai celebration.

There are 15 sand sculptures symbolizing the national identities of Laos and other ASEAN member countries. These cultural values have been passed on over generations. These include a naga replica, Vientiane’s 450 Year symbol, That Luang, a Buddha image, the ASEAN emblem, and an elephant, among others.

“Anyone who has yet to experience the sculptures is welcome to visit at a convenient time.  They can also swim in the cool water of the Mekong to cool down from the hot days,” said Ms Latsadaphone.
