Disaster at seas or waters can happen anytime, but it can be prevented or reduced if passengers know of safety measures that should be carried out before or in the event of a tragedy. Towards raising awareness to the public on safety at waters, the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam, PBMP, this morning held a Water Taxi Inspection Operation at the PBMP Post near the Bandar Seri Begawan-Temburong disembarking pontoon in Jalan Residency.
According to Awang Haji Yusoff bin Haji Metusin, Head of the Enforcement and Investigation of the Maritime and Port Authority of Brunei Darussalam, in ensuring all water taxi and passenger boats operated in the Brunei waters must possess registered license with the Maritime Authority. The boats should also equipped with safety equipment's, specifically life jacket. He said all boat operators should prioritise safety by encouraging passengers to wear life jacket while on-board even though for a short distance.
The operation will continuously be carried out at the waters and jetties in order to achieve the campaign's objective. PBMP will provide a location for boat registration, inspection and selling of safety equipment's at the PBMP post nearby the Bandar Seri Begawan-Temburong jetty in Jalan Residency, for the convenience of boat operators and the public to register their boats and obtain safety equipment's. Currently, there are a number of companies providing safety jackets rental services. Boat operators who fail to abide by the stipulated regulations is liable to a fine of not more than two thousand dollars or compound of not more than 500 dollars. According to PBMP regulations, boat operators must also passed the Class 9 Special Driving Course to obtain a license. Therefore, PBMP will begin the course in the capital tonight.
