More than 60 people received their certificates yesterday, after completing a one-day introductory course on fertigation technology at the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood.

On hand to present the certificates was Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT).

The course facilitator was Yaseer Suhaimi Mohamad, a Malaysian fertigation specialist, who is also a senior lecturer at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI).

During the course, he provided various useful insights and methods on tending practices and technologies that are used in the fertigation system.

Haji Irwandy bin Haji Lois, General Manager of Ameenfarm Agrotech & Trading who is also a Committee member of Federation of Brunei Malay Enterpreneurs (PPPMB) Belait District, told the Bulletin that the course was designed to introduce local farmers to the benefits of the fertigation system, so that they would consider moving from traditional farming to modern farming.

The fertigation system is a modern farming process which combines both water and fertiliser simultaneously, to create "precise farming".

Its benefits include a reduction in plant diseases, an increase in crop yield and a speedy harvest, which is cost-effective for farmers using this method.

The course was organised by Ameenfarm Agrotech & Trading, and supported by the Department of Agriculture and Agrifood, under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT).

Among those witnessing yesterday's certificate presentation was Hajah Aidah binti Haji Mohd Hanifah, the Director of Agriculture and Agrifood. Members of the PPPMB were also present during the ceremony to learn the fertigation technology while showing their support for Hj Irwandy in his entrepreneurial endeavors.
