Two types or varieties of hybrid paddy has been identified as having potential for higher production and are suitable for planting in the country. The hybrid paddy is the result of a study through a collaborative research project on varieties of hybrid paddy between the Agriculture and Agrifood Department with Syarikat PT. Biogene Plantation from Indonesia. The Sembada B9 and Sembada 188 are the varieties of hybrid paddy that are capable for higher production or yields at areas with irrigation system in the country.

Dayang Khairunnisa binti Haji Omar Ali, Agronomist at the Agriculture and Agrifood Department in an interview with RTB shared that the collaborative project began in May 2016. Among the main objectives of the project is to identify the suitable varieties of paddies by Biogene Plantation in the country and whether it is capable for a consistent higher yield with the local agro climate. Based on the research, Sembada B9 and Sembada 188 have shown a consistent production of 5 to 6 metric tonne per hectare for the past two seasons. Meanwhile, the third harvest is expected to reach more than 6 metric tonne per hectare.

The research is among the collaborative projects by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism through the Agriculture and Agrifood Department with foreign institutions in efforts to produce higher yields of paddy, exceeding the department's benchmark of 8 point 5 metric tonne per hectare at every season and thus, help to increase the country's self-sufficiency.
