The meeting this morning also heard an explanation from Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin Bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs regarding the halal status of imported food product.
Yang Berhormat Pehin said that to address this issue, the Ministry of Religious Affairs specifically the Islamic Religious Council takes guidance from several existing laws. Touching on raw meat, Yang Berhormat said its production within the country and import from overseas are controlled under the Halal Meat Act, Chapter 183 and its regulations. Yang Berhormat said under this act, any individual or parties wishing to bring in and import raw meat from overseas are first required to fulfill legal requirements stipulated under the Act. Touching on the Halal Certificate and Halal Label (Amendment) Order 2017 which took effect on the 26th of May 2017, Yang Behormat said the Order only makes it compulsory for local companies and entrepreneurs of food products or those registered locally but have branches overseas to apply for the halal certificate or halal permit. Yang Berhormat said the Order is not enforced on overseas companies, but the halal certificate or halal permit can still be applied by them voluntarily.
