If all goes according to plan, Sarawak will soon have a comprehensive cancer centre next to the Heart Centre in Samarahan.

Minister for Local Government Prof Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian said the RM400 million facility would have 200 beds and would be able to provide comprehensive care for children and adults, including pregnant women.

“The federal government has agreed in principle to set up Sarawak Cancer Centre,” he said yesterday at Go Bald 2016 here that was launched by Datin Patinggi Datuk Jamilah Anu, the chief minister’s wife. Dr Sim said there was a need for such a centre as cancer was the second most dreaded disease in the state after heart ailments.

“Early cancer detection is very important. I urge everyone to get checked. No one is too young, and children can also be affected.”

He added that this proposed centre would be built next to the Heart Center in Samarahan as there was ample land for the facility and parking.

On Go Bald 2016, Dr Sim praised the event organiser, Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS), for holding the event to raise funds to help needy children and their families.

Meanwhile, Jamilah herself shaved her 25-year-old son Azizul Annuar Adenan’s head in support of the event.

Azizul brought along 20 relatives and friends to get bald, and the group collected RM100,000 within a week.

Go Bald 2016 is to raise funds to support cancer stricken children. It is being held for the eighth consecutive year.

SCCS’s annual operational cost is about RM1.5 million.

On the average, 70 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, excluding relapse cases.

Go Bald will be held at Delta Mall in Sibu and Parkcity Everly Hotel Bintulu on May 22.

SCCS treasurer Gary Ho, SCCS advisor Datuk Lorna Enan Muloon and CityONE Megamall general manager Brandon Lo were also present at the event at CityOne Megamall yesterday.
