Understanding 'riba' or usury and its effects in daily life according to the Quran and Hadis were among the matters shared in the Islamic Business and Finance Symposium, organised by Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, BIBD in conjunction with its 25th anniversary.

 

The symposium was launched by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, the Minister of Development. The symposium also among other things discussed the opportunities as well as challenges of usury in the modern world. Also present were Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, the Permanent Secretary for Technical and Professional at the Ministry of Development, and Doctor Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak, the Acting Permanent Secretary for Administration and Finance at the Ministry of Development.

 

One hundred participants comprising government staff, entrepreneurs, Islamic finance practitioners as well as scholars and students attended the symposium. The symposium is in support of Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam, AMBD Financial Sector Blueprint 2016-2025 and its strategies to elevate the reputation and quality of Islamic finance in Brunei Darussalam.
