World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom on Tuesday praised Cuba's success in improving the healthcare quality for its population.
"Cuba is the perfect place to learn how to achieve universal coverage, even with few resources," Adhanom said at a press conference here.
The WHO leader is attending the island country's third International Health Convention "Cuba Salud 2018," an event held from April 23-27 that brings together high-ranking authorities of the sector from over 80 countries as well as the WHO.
In praising the Cuban healthcare system, Adhanom also mentioned Cuba's medicine manufacturing industry, in which the island enjoys over 160 patents, and its efforts in sending doctors, nurses and health technicians to other countries.
Over 48,000 Cuban medical professionals are now involved in 60 nations in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.
With the Pan-American Healthcare Organization currently hosting its Vaccination Week in the Americas, Adhanom praised Cuba for providing 13 free vaccines for children, eight of which are produced on the island.
Adhanom also called on the participants in the convention to devote themselves in curbing the spread of diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya in their own countries.
