International School Brunei's (ISB) Year 4 classes, which included His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Wakeel and Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda 'Abdul Muntaqim ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji AI-Muhtadee Billah, toured Kampong Ayer as part of a field trip looking at human settlements.
As one of Brunei's most significant cultural and historical landmarks, the famed Kampong Ayer offers a unique opportunity to learn about life in one of the world's biggest water settlements, understand Brunei's rich cultural and historical background, as well as see some of Brunei's other key landmarks, according to a press release.
At 8.30am, around 95 Year 4 students, 16 accompanying staff and parent volunteers boarded four water taxis at the Dermaga Diraja in Bandar Seri Begawan for a tour of Kampong Ayer and a series of activities at the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery.
The boat tour of the Kampong Ayer showed students a number of Brunei's landmarks as well as the key characteristics of a human settlement on water, such as that of the Kampong Ayer.
The tour covered landmarks such as the Istana Darussalam, Istana Nurul Iman, the Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Mosque and the Brunei High Court.
In terms of the academic attractions, the students learnt about the structures and systems in place in order for people to live in such an environment.
They learnt about the importance of the water pipes and bridges, electricity access, mosques, schools, fire and police stations, and fuel stations.
In addition to the boat tour, a host of activities took place at the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery, aimed at increasing the students' awareness of the history and culture of Kampong Ayer.
After watching an introductory film which documented the Kampong Ayer history over the past thousand years, they also learnt about the practice of weaving.
While they did not get to weave any fabrics, the students did try their hands at weaving baskets and mats.
While at the cultural gallery, students got to climb the observation tower and practiced their art skills, attempting to sketch the amazing landscapes the Kampong Ayer had to offer.
Once this was completed, the students made their way back to the Dermaga Diraja and returned to ISB's campus in Sungai Hanching.
