Thirty nine illegal immigrants, including five drug addicts, were detained by the police during an integrated operation around the state capital early yesterday morning.

Acting city police chief, Superintendent Mohd Azhar Hamin, said the six-hour operation which began at 1 am yesterday was carried out in Asia City, Inanam and Kampung Likas.

“Some 85 persons were checked for documentation and out of these numbers, 34 people were detained further for allegedly staying in the country illegally.

“Police also arrested five men for drug offences after preliminary urine tests revealed positive results of drug abuse,” he said, adding that those detained were aged between 17 and 45 years old.

Mohd Azhar said the illegal immigrants would be referred to the Immigration Department for further action while the drug addicts would be remanded further under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

He said such operation would be carried out from time to time to flush out illegal immigrants in the state.

Mohd Azhar also thanked the public for their continuous support to the police and look forward to more such cooperation in the future.
