Enhancing Resources Capacity in Libraries: Addressing Trends, Issues and Challenges

In an effort to enhance the electronic resources capacity of university libraries in Asean member countries, the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday launched a two-day meeting until May 25 which is being held at the Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Advancement (ILIA), UBD.
Themed 'Enhancing Resources Capacity in Libraries: Addressing Trends, Issues and Challenges', the meeting is coordinated by the Asean University Network Inter-Library Online (AUNILO) Secretariat and the Asean University Network (AUN) Secretariat.
The meeting will focus on continuously improving the assessment of electronic resources in university libraries to raise awareness and visibility of its services among users as well as to explore and identify best practices for potential collaboration or resource sharing among members.
During the event, participating member states will discuss and exchange ideas and provide suggestions based on their past experiences.
Present as guest of honour at the opening ceremony was Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Ayub Sadiq @ Lin Naing, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) at UBD. The meeting is attended by representatives from university libraries from Asean member countries, the AUNILO Secretariat and the AUN Secretariat.
The event saw presentations by Dr. Peter Sidorko from the University of Hong Kong on 'Digital Duress: Challenges and Opportunities in Hong Kong Academic Libraries'; Dr. Cholstis Dhirathiti, AUN Deputy Director, on 'Introduction to Asean Cyber University Project and KERIS'; as well as Brunei Darussalam's country report on the meeting's theme, presented by Ahmad Safwan Jalil, Liason Officer of AUN and chaired by Nawang Purwanti, Chief Librarian, Central Library, Universitas Gadjah Mada.
In order to enhance the effectiveness of the meeting, a workshop will be held from May 26-27 on the topic of 'Evaluation and Assessment of Electronic Resources in Universities Libraries', facilitated by Heng Kai Leong and Tamera Haken from Singapore Management University as well as Merhane binti Mohamed Salleh, Senior Librarian from UBD Library.
According to a statement from UBD, the workshop aims to evaluate the usage of eResources to meet the institutions' Return on Investment (ROI) requirements, to share best practices in evaluating the eResources based on the users' needs and ensuring that the libraries' collection development policies are in line with the current trends in acquiring eResources.
