ASEAN Defense Ministers Reaffirm Strengthening Cooperation

VIENTIANE, LAOS
ASEAN defense ministers today adopted in Vientiane three key documents on ASEAN military cooperation for humanitarian and disaster relief purposes, ASEAN Military Medicine Coordination Centre, and initiative on the establishment of internet security experts’ team under the ADMM plus framework.
At the 10th ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting, which was also attended by ASEAN Secretary General Le Luong Minh, the ASEAN defense ministers signed the joint statement to promote defence cooperation for strong ASEAN Community.
The document constitutes fundamental for enhancing the cooperation among member states to contribute to the maintaining of peace, stability, security, development and prosperity in the region.
Besides to exchanging points of view on defense and security affairs in the region and the world at large as well as challenges and opportunities, the ministers agreed to enhance cooperation to handle non military challenges in the region including natural disasters, terrorist attracts, transnational crimes, and those regarding maritime security, internet security, and drug trafficking.
They reaffirmed that it is necessary to address the conflicts in South China Sea according to international laws and expressed their welcome for the establishment of ASEAN Community on December 31, 2015 and the adoption of ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together, especially ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint 2025 at the 27th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The ministers also expressed their supports for the existing cooperation mechanisms and new initiatives designed to promote and strengthen ASEAN armed forces.
