Five persons were wounded in a foiled attempt by armed men to abduct a lady doctor in Sulu Friday afternoon.
Authorities said among those wounded were two soldiers, one policeman, a civilian, and the lady doctor identified as Marian Lao.
Police identified the other victims as Marine Cpl. Omar F. Somcio, Marine PFC Marlon M. Banayag, SPO4 Tubadjir Mandangan, and Radem Maman, 23.
Investigation showed the incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Scott Road, Barangay San Raymundo, Jolo town in Sulu.
Maj. Filemon Tan, spokesman, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom), said two armed men shot Lao and her two security escorts.
Mandangan, who was then on the other side of the road, heard the gunshots and responded to the scene but was also shot by the suspects.
Maman, 23, a civilian, was reported hit in the crossfire as he was passing by the area.
Tan said the suspects immediately boarded a blue Honda Wave 125 motorcycle and fled.
“The two security escorts suffered multiple gunshot wounds, while the lady doctor and the PNP personnel were hit on the left shoulder and lower left leg, respectively,” said the Wesmincom spokesman.
Maman was hit in the leg, according to police.
The victims were brought to Camp Teodulfo Hospital in Barangay Bus- Bus, Jolo, Sulu and were later airlifted to Camp Navarro General Hospital in Zamboanga City.
“There have been reports that the lady doctor has been receiving kidnap threats from the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), but due to the presence of the duty escorts, the kidnapping was averted,” said Tan.
