Education Expert Lauded Brunei's Commitment

JALAN TUNGKU LINK, MUKIM GADONG A

A foreign expert in education lauded the Sultanate's real commitment in learning and teaching and agreed with the Brunei's Minister of Education's suggestions about focusing on education innovation and equipping the students for the challenges of the 21st century and on improving quality.

Professor of Education and Innovation of University of Bath Spa, UK, Grainne Conole, shared this thought in her keynote speech titled 'Creative Quality Education: Enhancing Innovative' at the 2nd Politeknik Brunei International Symposium 2016 at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Rashidah Sa'adatul Bolkiah (PAPRSB) Institute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam yesterday.

She also echoed the speech made by the minister to push the boundaries by challenging the traditional assumptions and the need to give students the opportunities to do all these things. She added that the notion of openness and utilising digital technology is becoming more important in education over the past 10 years or so.

According to her, digital technologies enable more open practices. Slogging has transformed her as a teacher and a researcher, she said. "If I publish an article in a journal, I am lucky if I have five people to read it. But If I post it in my blog, it goes to thousands of people and if the  articles are retweeted, readership will multiply," she added.

She also said that social media has transformed what we do as learners, teachers and researchers. Despite the fantastic potential of technologies like rich interaction in multimedia and support, there are plenty of barriers to their use such as teachers lacking the necessary digital skills and often there is no reward for teaching and competition from other providers.

Meanwhile, in a panel discussion on Innovative Teaching Practices to Drive Better Student Outcomes, Professor Munikumar Ramasamy Venkatsalu from PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, shared his views on how to add value to social media.
