BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The High Court recently allowed an appeal of a woman to extend time to pay a fine imposed in the case of possession of contraband cigarettes. However, the court refused to revise the fine imposed.

The defendant, Siti Zubaidah binti Marsal, was given eight months to settle a B$14,700 fine after the trial in her case concluded on July 2, 2015.

Siti Zubaidah was able to pay only B$1,230 up till the date of application on May 14, 2016.

High Court Justice Dato Paduka Haji Hairol Arni bin Haji Abdul Majid dismissed the defendant's application for fine reduction and ordered Siti Zubaidah to pay the fine by the end of May, 2016, or serve the remainder from the total 12 months' imprisonment of the default sentence.

DPP Aiman Zakaria appeared as respondent in the application.
