A local satellite communications service provider recently received 20 Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) students who visited the Telisai Earth Station (TES).
Officials from Network Integrity Assurance Technologies Sdn Bhd (NiAT), who manages the facility in TES, welcomed the students and enlightened them on the practical and real time set-up of the country's first satellite communications teleport and operations centre.
In a welcoming speech which was followed by an interactive presentation by the Business Development Officer for NiAT; Md Yamin bin Abdul Hamid discussed the satellite telecommunications technology and how NiAT is leading the industry for Brunei.
"The service we provide is literally out of this world, with the satellites that we link to orbiting 36,000 km above Earth. Our job is to use that technology to bridge the gap for those who are out of coverage and for customers who need 'always-on' connectivity.
"Satellite communications remain the most resilient and responsive for certain environmental situations, for example remote or rural areas, vehicles moving over large geographical areas, emergencies and disasters," he explained.
The students were later taken on a tour around the Earth Station and studied the Network Operations Centre (NOC), where a NiAT team of fully local engineers monitor the network.
NiAT is a Telekom Brunei Berhad subsidiary and the homegrown satellite communications service provider in Brunei, fully licensed to offer satellite-based telecommunications such as the Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) - a two-way satellite ground station providing an array of applications through data transmission, and also satellite mobility products such as the Global Satellite Phone Service (GSPS) and the Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) - making available telephony and Internet through satellite.
