Year 9 and 10 students from Katok Secondary School gained insights on how to play Go, one of the oldest board games in the world, after a recent visit to the school by members of the Brunei Darussalam Go Association.

According to Chin Sin Voon, Brunei's Go coach, "Go is a very ancient, yet very new game. It dates back to over 3,000 years ago from China, and has become a global phenomenon."

He added, "The game of Go can benefit students by improving their calculating skills, creativity, cogitation, judgement skills and concentration levels. It's for this very reason that Go has been used as an educational medium in China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan."

On the students' response to their visit, he said, "It was great. We have talked to the school's co-curricular activity teachers, and they may want another session after the mid-term. Judging from the session last Saturday, some students became interested and are willing to continue learning the game."

Chin also disclosed that Katok Secondary School is the first school to receive a visit from the Brunei Darussalam Go Association, and the members are looking forward to visiting other schools to promote the game.

Meanwhile, some Go tutorial sessions have been planned for St George's School and Seri Mulia Sarjana School, after the mid-term exams.

The association will also visit Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, for a game demonstration at the school's December carnival.
