The Collaboration Research Grant has been introduced by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to allow its academicians to conduct joint researches with outside parties to produce high quality research products.

UMS vice chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Harun Abdullah said that the special grant has been introduced to increase the number and quality of researches carried out by its academic staff.

Speaking at the launch of the UMS Research Award 2015 held at Dewan Bangkuasi near here yesterday, he also said that the collaboration with outsiders can increase the opportunities for them to produce high impact publications and increase international recognition for the university.

Harun said that initially, the allocation given for each collaboration was RM200,000 with foreign institutions and RM70,000 with institutions within the country.

At the same time, he said that he would like to see each allocation spent to show huge impact.

In addition to that, the university also provides the UMS research grants scheme for its own members amounting to RM2 million.

He said that UMS received a total of RM7.1 million allocation to carry out 69 new research projects and that they have successfully patented two research products while four more were in the midst of being filed.

At the same time, 18 products were registered for the trade and copyright stamp.

This year, UMS is targetting 420 articles to be published by its academicians, he said.

Meanwhile, a total of 397 recognition awards were presented to 170 UMS academicians yesterday.
