Indonesian Fined for Smuggling Cigarettes

An Indonesian man was ordered to settle a fine of $25,700, or serve 18 months and three weeks in jail in default of payment, after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to keeping smuggled cigarettes.
Mohamad Yusron, 39, was detained by Customs preventive officers suspecting him of selling cigarettes to the public at 'Jalan Kecil Tanjong Nangka at 8 pm on June 2, 2016.
The defendant was found carrying one carton and 11 packets of cigarettes by the officers.
This led to an inspection at the defendant's house at Kampong Tanjong Nangka, Sengkurong where 63 cartons and 70 packets of cigarettes were recovered by the Customs team.
Senior Magistrate Haji Nabil Daraina bin Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Badaruddin presided in the case yesterday.
